What is IPv6 Dual Stack Lite?

Dual Stack Lite is a technique that allows IPv4 and IPv6 packets over the same Network to send and receive. Part of the IPv4 traffic is transported over the IPv6 network, which increases the capacity of the existing IPv4 network. Dual Stack Lite also works the other way around and transports some IPv6 traffic over the existing IPv4 network.

How does IPv6 Dual Stack Lite work?

In a Network Dual Stack Lite (DS-Lite) is used when devices with IPv6-capable and IPv4-capable network cards are connected at the same time. DS-Lite is based on the 6to4 tunneling protocol and allows IPv6 packages that are already installed in an existing IPv4 network to be installed. The different types of IPv6 Dual Stack Lite

There are currently three different types of IPv6 Dual Stack Lite, which differ in the way they handle traffic between the two protocols hand off.

Advantages and disadvantages of an IPv6 Dual Stack Lite

Currently, most companies use IPv4 to build their networks. Every device connected to the Internet has a unique IPv4 address. However, the number of available IPv4 addresses is limited and therefore IPv6 will be used in the future.

IPv6 has more addresses than IPv4. This allows the network to grow better. Another advantage of IPv6 is that it no longer requires the NAT technology that IPv4 uses to translate private to public IP addresses. This means that a unique IP address can be assigned to each device in the network and no address conflicts can occur.

However, a disadvantage of IPv6 is that it is not fully backwards compatible with IPv4. This means that devices that only support IPv4 cannot communicate with an IPv6 network. Another disadvantage of IPv6 is that switching to this protocol can be relatively expensive for companies.
